TRAILS and TRIALS
OF A WW II PILOT AND HIS BRIDE
by Louise Sullivan

“Trails and Trials of a WW II Pilot and His Bride” is a true story of love and war, covering a five-year period, 1941-1946. It is funny. It is sad. It describes the hopes and anxieties, the adventures and misadventures of a young couple who were making every effort to live life to it’s fullest for all the time they had. Jim Sullivan’s flight training, flight overseas and his thirty missions as a B-17 pilot with the 384th Bomb Group that earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal with four clusters and the Presidential Citation, are described in detail.
The author’s brother, Claude Ray Hawkins, a navigator with the 306th Bomb Group, was on one of these missions to Berlin. He was shot down and killed over Holland. The description of this air battle as told by a Dutch lady is included.

The book tells of the impact the war had on the small town of Clewiston, Florida, where there was a Royal Air Force Flight Training School and a Prisoner of War camp. And how the citizens coped with the waiting, shortages and stress.

Many books are written by the participants but this one is written as a memorial to the author’s deceased husband and brother.
